How much does a wedding ACTUALLY cost?
Ah, the age-old question! The truth is, every wedding is unique and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Cape Town weddings can range widely in cost depending on your guest count, venue choice, desired level of formality, and your priorities.
Here’s a breakdown to get you started:
- Venue: This is typically the biggest chunk of your budget, often accounting for 30-50% of the total cost. Venue fees can vary greatly depending on the location, size, and amenities offered. Luxury wineries and waterfront locations will naturally command a higher price tag compared to a charming garden venue.
- Catering: Food and beverage will likely be your next biggest expense, usually falling in the 20-35% range. Consider the number of guests, desired meal format (plated dinner, buffet, cocktail reception), and bar options (open bar, cash bar, signature cocktails).
- Flowers & Decor: Floral arrangements and décor can add a touch of magic to your wedding day, but they can also impact your budget significantly. Think about what’s most important to you – a statement floral installation or a more minimalist approach with beautiful centerpieces?
- Photography & Videography: These professionals capture your day’s memories, so it’s important to find someone whose style aligns with your vision. The cost will depend on experience, the number of hours of coverage, and whether you choose both photo and video.
- Attire: This is a highly personal expense, so prioritize accordingly. Will you be splurging on a designer gown or opting for a more affordable option? Don’t forget alterations, shoes, and accessories!
- Entertainment: Live music, a DJ, or even a photo booth can add a fun element to your reception. Costs will vary depending on the type of entertainment, duration of service, and any additional equipment needed.
- Stationery: Wedding invitations, save-the-dates, and thank-you cards are a lovely touch. Stationery can range from budget-friendly online options to custom-designed suites.

Pro Wedding Planning Tip:
Once you have a rough idea of your priorities and desired guest count, a good starting point for budgeting is to allocate 10-15% of your overall income towards your wedding.
But no worries, we’ll work with you to create a budget that reflects your dreams and ensures your special day isn’t financially stressful. For example, for a simple and low-key wedding of 50 guests, you would expect to spend around R350,000+ and a wedding for 50 guests on the higher luxury end would start around R650,000+.
On average we work on budgets between R650,000 – R2 500,000.00 and the opportunities are endless.

What are the Marriage Requirements in Cape Town, South Africa?
Planning a destination wedding? We’ve got you covered! Getting married in Cape Town is relatively straightforward, requiring some official documents and a bit of paperwork. We’ll guide you through the process step-by-step, making sure your “I do” is legal and stress-free.
Should one or both of you hold foreign passports (not South African) you will need to complete steps 1 and 2 before applying for your marriage certificate. However, should you both hold Shouth African passports steps 1 and 2 do not apply.
- An appointment/interview is to be set up with a Home Affairs commissioner at the Barak Street office in the City centre. Once this has been done, it will be reflected when the marriage officer submits the wedding.
- The marriage officer will also need to provide a referral letter for you to take with you to the meeting.
- You will need to complete a DHA-130 form.
- Your marriage register (DHA-30) is received on the day of the marriage – To complete this form you will need copies of your passports or identity documents. – Two professional ID images of each of you. – Two witnesses are required to sign this document with you, along with copies of their identity documents.
- You will need to produce a letter of no impediment from the home country in which your passports are held.
- Should you hold an Antenuptial Contract, the Marriage Officer will also require legal copies of this.
- And then a whole lot of patience in the process while your marriage officer submits the documents at Home Affairs to register your marriage.
- You will then receive an abridged marriage certificate.
- If you hold a foreign passport or if you plan to emigrate you will need to then apply for the unabridged marriage certificate, which carries apostille stamps and signatures. This can take anywhere between 3 months to a year to receive.
Pro Wedding Planning Tip: Don’t leave this to the last minute! Start gathering documentation early and familiarize yourself with the process well in advance of your wedding date.
